Key result
Mmp14-/- bone marrow engraftment increases interstitial collagen in atherosclerotic plaques vs Mmp14+/+ marrow.
Why the study?
Although in vitro results suggest collagenase activity for MMP-14, in vivo evidence for its function in atherosclerosis remained scant.
Does MMP-14 deficiency in bone marrow-derived cells increase collagen accumulation in mouse atherosclerotic plaques?
Does MMP-14 deficiency in bone marrow-derived cells increase collagen accumulation in mouse atherosclerotic plaques?

May caution against MMP-14 inhibition in atherosclerosis; leaves open its role in human plaque stability.
Schneider et al. (2008) studied Atherosclerosis (n=26). Mmp14-/- bone marrow cells vs. Mmp14+/+ bone marrow cells was evaluated on Interstitial collagen content in plaques (p=<0.05). Engraftment with Mmp14-/- bone marrow resulted in significantly more interstitial collagen in atherosclerotic plaques compared to Mmp14+/+ bone marrow after 16 weeks of an atherogenic diet (P<0.05).
