Mixed methods examine professionals' views on coercive control and its role in protective orders, highlighting the need for clear legal definitions.
The current study used mixed methods to examine thoughts about coercive control from 82 professionals. Study findings include: (1) many participants had difficulty defining coercive control, but most agreed it plays a crucial role in interpersonal victimization; (2) participants believed coercive control happens in situations outside of partner abuse; (3) most participants indicated that coercive control resources and information would be helpful; and (4) although most participants recognized that coercive control is harmful and should be included in protective orders, they had concerns. Legal definitions of coercive control need to be carefully crafted to maximize victim safety and minimize harm.
