Key result
Low-dose colchicine reduces major CV events by ~20% versus control in secondary prevention.
Why the study?
Inflammation is recognized as a probable causal factor in recurrence of atherosclerotic events, making low-dose colchicine a promising therapeutic target for secondary prevention.
Meta-Analysis (n=30,753)
Supports IL-1β inhibition for secondary prevention in high-CRP patients; confirms inflammation as a modifiable causal pathway in atherosclerosis.

Sousa et al. (2026) conducted a meta-analysis in Atherosclerotic disease (secondary prevention) (n=30,753). Low-dose colchicine vs. Placebo or usual care was evaluated on Composite of cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, or stroke (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.67-0.94). Low-dose colchicine reduced the composite of cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, or stroke by 20% (OR 0.80) compared to placebo or usual care in secondary prevention.
