Systematic review analyzes definitions of wine tourism, suggesting updates to reflect modern trends and challenges.
Wine tourism has gained increasing attention in research and practice. Its much quoted definition is over 20 years old and does not reflects changes in tourist behaviour, wine regions, and tourism. This study reviews and compares existing definitions of wine tourism. A systematic literature review was conducted using the Web of Science and following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Fifty-two publications were analysed using bibliometric and content analyses. The findings indicate that several definitions refer to the visit of wine regions, wineries, and wine-related activities. But they differ in their scope. Many definitions miss recent developments, such as digitalization, climate change, sustainability, and visitor experiences. This study provides a foundation for an updated definition.
