Evaluates berth configurations to improve navigation and tourism in the Nile River, suggesting optimal layouts for sustainability.
Inland river berthing systems are essential for navigation and tourism along the Nile River; however, inefficient berth layouts can disrupt flow patterns and increase the potential for sediment accumulation. This study presents an integrated framework for evaluating berth configurations in the Aswan reach using GIS analysis and two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling (SRH-2D). Four alternative layouts were assessed under different flow conditions. A Hydraulic Efficiency Index (HEI) was developed to quantify berth performance by combining flow velocity and navigational depth into a single indicator. The results show that berth configuration significantly influences hydraulic behavior and potential sediment accumulation zones. Although Alternative 1 achieves the highest efficiency, Alternative 4 provides the most balanced solution, combining high capacity with stable hydraulic conditions. The proposed approach supports improved decision-making for sustainable berth planning in river systems.
