The IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) functions as both constraint and enabler in scientific writing. This note examines the purposes served by standardized scientific writing conventions, the methods available within and adjacent to IMRaD for conveying specificity and uncertainty, and how creative choices (selection, emphasis, narrative arc) operate within evidential constraints.
