Examination of creative writing standards' roles in conveying evidence and reasoning in scientific contexts.
The IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) functions as both constraint and enabler in scientific writing. Departures from IMRaD—case narratives, epidemiologic briefs, synthesis essays—involve deliberate literary choices about how to convey evidence and reasoning. This note examines the purposes served by standardized scientific writing conventions, the methods available within and adjacent to IMRaD for conveying specificity and uncertainty, and how creative choices (selection, emphasis, narrative arc) operate within evidential constraints.
