Concept highlights advances in organic synthesis with halogen bonds influencing electron donor–acceptor complexes, suggesting innovative pathways for material development.
This Concept highlights recent advances in the field of organic synthesis based on electron donor–acceptor (EDA) complex photochemistry, with particular emphasis on the dual role of halogen bonding in governing both assembly and reactivity. Specifically, halides may act as key components of the noncovalent interaction that stabilizes the complex, while also serving as effective leaving groups that enable radical generation upon single electron transfer. Here, an overview of the principal techniques used to investigate EDA complexes is provided, followed by selected, recent examples illustrating the broad applicability of these systems, including stoichiometric, catalytic, and nanomaterial‐based approaches. Lastly, future perspectives on improved system characterization, mechanistic elucidation, and catalytic material development are briefly discussed.
