How do peasant organizations use citizen science? What challenges do plantations pose for citizen science? This article examines anti-plantation citizen science: data collection by laypeople to demonstrate the violence of plantations, challenge their hegemony, and counter plantation science. We examine the water science initiatives of a food sovereignty and water rights alliance on Guatemala’s southern coast. We draw on STS perspectives on citizen science, theories of the Plantationocene, critical agrarian studies, and engaged ethnography to show how citizen science can disrupt knowledge gaps and knowledge hierarchies that reinforce plantation logics, and how plantations incite and frustrate citizen science.
