Experimental studies identify how stress concentrators affect strength and durability in timber composites, suggesting critical shifts to minimize defects.
Statement of the problem. To identify the effect of the presence of stress concentrators in timber or a timber composite on strength and durability. Results. The results of experimental studies on the effect of a stress concentrator on the strength and durability of timber, plywood, chipboard and fiberboard are presented. The results of the durability study are based on the provisions of the thermal fluctuation theory of strength. Conclusions. The complex of the studies sufficiently demonstrates the effect of defects on the strength and durability of timber and timber composites. The studies also revealed the safe distances by which defects should be shifted relative to the center of the sample.
