Taking it easy: Natural product synthesis is a stressful task. Exploiting the understanding of biosynthetic pathways and implementing genetic engineering into the synthetic chemist's portfolio paves the way for new alternatives for natural product synthesis. This Minireview describes “hybrid” strategies of organic synthesis and biosynthesis that result in facile access to complex natural products and libraries based on them.
