Abstract Modern satellite methods for measuring total ozone and ozone profiles are analyzed: methods of transparency, atmospheric radiation, reflected and scattered solar radiation. Their advantages and disadvantages, random and systematic errors, and vertical resolution are considered. Some examples of satellite instruments are given, and the creation of an optimal global ozone monitoring system is discussed.
