The Bedul tribe of beduin lived within the ancient site of Petra until 1985, when they were moved to the new vi1lage of Umm Saihun. This study compares the architecture and spatial organization of the two locations, using techniques developed for describing spatial patterns in buildings. The move has led to a clearer separation between public and private life, the desire for expansion and accumulation of possessions, and specialization of room functions.
