Ceramic and glass objects often have paper labels adhered which may contain important historical information. They may therefore come to be considered an integral part of the object. As part of the object's conservation treatment, such labels may have to be removed by conservators with little knowledge of paper. Since current methods of removal may prove to be too uncontrollable in many circumstances, a new method was developed using localised controlled humidification with water vapour permeable membranes (Gore‐Tex and SympaTex) which minimises the danger of damage to the object, the label and the written information. Surface cleaning of, and removing old adhesives from labels, as well as re‐attaching and storing them are also discussed.
