This essay explores the philosophical link between Gödel’s theorem and Nishida’s self-identity, highlighting implications for contradiction and closure.
Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem is standardly received as a limitation: a boundary onwhat formal systems can prove. Its productive side has long been known to mathematics —each honest, effectively given system generates a truth beyond itself, and adding that truthyields a system that generates another, without end — but the philosophical question ofwhy self-reference generates, rather than merely bounds, has scarcely been asked. Thisessay answers it with Nishida Kitarō. Nishida’s absolute contradictory self-identity (zettaimujun-teki jiko dōitsu, 絶対矛盾的自己同一) and the architecture of the theorem realize asingle generative schema: self-specification — a gap fixed by each stage’s own constraint onitself — excess, incorporation, and non-completion. The correspondence is the jointrealization of one schema, not an isomorphism of instances: deliberately partial, exactwhere it holds, silent across most of what gives each side its content. Read through theschema, Nishida’s contradiction is true at the level at which it is stated but never final: eachcontradiction opens the dimension of meaning in which its form dissolves. Against therecent dialetheist interpretation of Nishida, the disagreement is relocated fromcontradiction to closure: a dialetheia requires a final totality of objects and a finalstandpoint of truth, and the essay argues there is neither. The reading is shown to require aconstructivist commitment; the correspondence’s independence is documented against aneighty-year silence; and a machine-checked study exhibits the difference between acontradiction that generates, one that is merely tolerated, and a self-reference that settlesinto inertness.
