Why the study?
To compare outcomes of surgical versus transcatheter mitral valve repair devices specifically used to treat degenerative mitral regurgitation pathologies.

May inform heart team selection of complementary mitral repair strategies by risk and anatomy; leaves open need for prospective comparative trials.
There is a wide range of pathologies to account for severe degenerative mitral regurgitation. Mitral valve repair has proven superior to replacement in the treatment of degenerative mitral regurgitation. Although complex pathologies or those with concomitant diseases can best be treated by surgery, transcatheter mitral valve repair offers treatment alternatives in high-risk patients with less complex pathologies, with a focus more on symptomatic improvement. In this review we compare outcomes of surgical versus transcatheter mitral valve repair devices used to treat specifically in degenerative pathologies. Based on current evidence, patients' risk profile and anatomical complexity should determine the optimal repair strategy. Transcatheter and surgical mitral repair techniques are not substitutes, rather complementary, and both should be in the armamentarium of the heart team to treat patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation.

Yazdchi et al. (2019) conducted a review in Degenerative mitral regurgitation. Transcatheter mitral valve repair vs. Surgical mitral valve repair was evaluated. Transcatheter and surgical mitral repair techniques are complementary strategies for treating degenerative mitral regurgitation, with selection based on patient risk profile and anatomical complexity.
