Survey analysis reveals student perceptions of AI tools in academics, indicating positive benefits and concerns.
This paper describes an empirical study through survey analysis on the perceptions of AI tools in academics by students, with a sample size of 455 valid responses obtained from students of various engineering, science, commerce, and arts disciplines in Pune, Maharashtra. With the help of python (Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn) for data analysis, descriptive statistics and chi-square test of independence is carried out in order to find patterns in the use of AI tools, frequency of use, and academic purposes. From the results, there is a statistically significant relationship between academic purpose and selection of AI tools (χ² = 92.64, df = 42, p < 0.001), and the popularly used AI tools for writing, concept understanding, and summarization are ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google translate respectively. There was a positive perception among the students regarding AI tools, with benefits like increased efficiency, accuracy, academic confidence; however, they were also concerned about overreliance and authenticity of outputs. The supplementary files attached here include the research paper, presentation slides, and the python code for data analysis.
