Assesses neurodevelopment in children with congenital heart disease, highlighting critical cardiovascular links.
Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at greater risk of neurodevelopmental (ND) delays and disorders than those with normal hearts. However, the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular mechanisms underlying this association are unknown. We aimed to exploit a natural experiment between 2 common forms of CHD, transposition and single ventricle physiology (SVP), that both undergo neonatal surgery but exhibit different ND outcomes and postoperative circulatory physiology to examine the relationship between brain development and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular hemodynamics.
