Key result
Deficiency of sex hormones during menopause contributes to vascular aging, endothelial dysfunction, and increased vascular wall rigidity through mechanisms like oxidative stress and inflammation.
Why the study?
Understanding the influence of menopausal hormonal changes on vascular vulnerability is important to develop therapeutic strategies for CVD prevention and treatment in middle-aged and older women.
Understanding the impact of menopausal hormonal changes on vascular aging is important for developing targeted cardiovascular prevention strategies in women.
May heighten vascular monitoring in postmenopausal women; leaves open targeted intervention trials.
Endothelial dysfunction and increased rigidity of vascular wall are leading pathophysiological factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) development. Currently, it is known about gender differences in CVDs morbidity and mortality, one of the causes of which may be vascular aging. The article considers mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction development at deficiency of sex hormones, alterations of vascular wall rigidity in the menopause. Such leading mechanisms of vascular aging as oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as the correlation of cardiovascular risk factors (arterial hypertension and obesity) and arterial walls rigidity in women are described. The importance of understanding the influence of changes in hormonal profile during menopause on vulnerability of aging vascular system to initiation and progression of CVDs has been shown in order to develop therapeutic strategies aimed at their prevention and treatment in women of middle and old age. Thereafter, early prevention and control of vascular aging will allow to avoid the development of severe CVDs.

Дадаева et al. (2024) conducted a review in Cardiovascular diseases and vascular aging in menopausal women. Menopause and sex hormone deficiency was evaluated. Deficiency of sex hormones during menopause contributes to vascular aging, endothelial dysfunction, and increased vascular wall rigidity through mechanisms like oxidative stress and inflammation.
