Inhaling a JUUL e-cigarette acutely increased mean arterial pressure and heart rate, and decreased muscle sympathetic nerve activity compared to a placebo e-cigarette in young nonsmokers.

Does inhaling on a nicotine-containing e-cigarette alter arterial pressure and peripheral sympathetic activity in young nonsmokers?
Inhaling on a nicotine-containing e-cigarette acutely increases blood pressure and heart rate while decreasing MSNA in young nonsmokers, similar to the physiological responses seen with traditional tobacco cigarettes.
Acute JUUL effects may signal hemodynamic risk in nonsmokers; leaves open clinical translation and requires larger trials.
The JUUL e-cigarette is the most popular e-cigarette in the market. In the present study, inhaling on a JUUL e-cigarette increased mean arterial pressure and heart rate, and decreased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). In contrast, inhaling on a placebo e-cigarette without nicotine elicited no sympathomimetic effects. Although previous tobacco cigarette studies have demonstrated increased mean arterial pressure and MSNA inhibition, ours is the first study to report similar responses while inhaling on an e-cigarette. Gonzalez et al. (2020) conducted an RCT in Healthy young nonsmokers. JUUL e-cigarette vs. Placebo e-cigarette without nicotine was evaluated on Mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Inhaling a JUUL e-cigarette acutely increased mean arterial pressure and heart rate, and decreased muscle sympathetic nerve activity compared to a placebo e-cigarette in young nonsmokers.
