The study demonstrates that connective tissue induces platelet activation via pathways distinct from ADP and epinephrine, functioning even in unstirred plasma and thrombasthenic platelets.
Animal data indicate distinct connective tissue platelet pathways; leaves open translation to human thrombosis or antiplatelet targets.
Summary Development of platelet factor 4 activity induced under various conditions by ADP, epinephrine, or connective tissue correlated well with release of 14C-serotonin measured simultaneously. In many ways connective tissue behaved differently from ADP and epinephrine, e.g., it caused PF-4 activity and 140-serotonin release in unstirred platelet-rich plasma and was effective in platelet-rich plasma from a thrombasthenic patient whereas ADP and epinephrine were not.
