Although recent investigations indicate that other factors are also important (1), the common denominator for a variety of experimental and clinical conditions that affect red cell formation is the relationship between the metabolic needs of an organism and the oxygen available to meet these requirements; these observations have led to the oxygen supply and demand theory for the regulation of erythropoiesis (2).
