Balloon aortic valvuloplasty improved aortic valve area and transvalvular pressure gradient at one year, and altered planned therapy in more than half of patients bridged to TAVR.
Why the study?
Does balloon aortic valvuloplasty improve hemodynamics and alter planned therapy in patients in the TAVR era?
Does balloon aortic valvuloplasty improve hemodynamics and alter planned therapy in patients in the TAVR era?
BAV provides temporary hemodynamic improvements and frequently alters the ultimate definitive therapy plan for patients initially bridged to TAVR or SAVR.
BAV in the TAVR era is not well studied BAV resulted in improvements in aortic valve area and transvalvular pressure gradient, and in patients with impaired left ventricle function, ejection fraction improved. These improvements diminished over time, but at one year were still improved compared to baseline. BAV resulted in changes of planned therapy more than half of the patients treated as bridge for TAVR did not ultimately undergo TAVR twice as many planned as bridge for surgical valve replacement actually had surgical valve replacement. BAV techniques remain unstandardized and can be improved.

Feldman et al. (2017) conducted a review in Aortic stenosis. Balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) was evaluated on Aortic valve area and transvalvular pressure gradient. Balloon aortic valvuloplasty improved aortic valve area and transvalvular pressure gradient at one year, and altered planned therapy in more than half of patients bridged to TAVR.
