An analysis of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of Er 3+ in CdIn 2 S 4 has been made. The Slater-Condon and spin-orbit parameters giving the best overall agreement between the predicted 'free-ion' spectrum and the observed spectrum are F 2 =420 cm -1 , F 4 =66 cm -1 , F 6 =6.75 cm -1 and zeta =2350 cm -1. The observed Stark splittings are explained by a cubic crystal field potential with parameters A 4 (r 4 ) =195cm -1 and A 6 (r 6 )=8cm -1 . The electron spin resonance spectrum consists of four magnetically inequivalent sites with axes along (111) directions and may be interpreted as the gamma 8 ground state split by 2-3 cm -1 .
