This paper reports the optical and electron spin resonance experiments made on Yb 3+ doped CdIn 2 S 4 in order to determine the site symmetry of the rare earth ion and thereby the structure of the host lattice. The structure that gives the best fit to the experimental results as decided on a point charge model is Cd 1/2 In 1/2 (Cd 1/2 In 3/2 )S 4 .
