The principles of operation and applications of frequency selective limiters (FSL's) are described. The various types of FSL's are grouped into three main classes: a) FSL's using multiple stagger tuned LC-resonant circuits, each containing two back-to-back diodes; b) FSL's using direct signal absorption; and c) FSL's using parametric subharmonic generation. The theory of operation of these devices is reviewed. From the results, it is noted that the characteristics of existing FSL's are attractive for their use in communication systems where signal interference is a serious problem to overcome.
