We obtained good recordings of daytime lightning flashes on standard inexpensive video tape recorders using a camera with a silicon diode array target tube and optical interference filters. The time resolution was roughly 1/60 sec, which enabled us to study the characteristics of lightning flashes with multiple channels to ground. Of 110 lightning flashes recorded during the summer of 1972, 35 had two or more channels to ground. The time interval between the appearance of separate channels in a single flash was shorter for lightning strikes to a mountaintop than for strikes to the surrounding plains.
