Escherichia coli tRNA has been fractionated on benzoylated DEAE-cellulose to yield five purified tRNAleu species. They differ in chromatographic behavior and in coding properties. These tRNAleu species are all charged by pure E. coli leucyl-tRNA synthetase. Partially purified leucyl-tRNA synthetase from KB cells or from yeast can esterify leucine completely only to some of the isoacceptors while insignificant reaction is observed with the others.
