The selective forces which can maintain traits such as alarm calls which are individually disadvantageous but socially advantageous are considered. The particular case in which flocks consist of sets of brothers and sisters is analyzed in detail. It is shown that equilibria with intermediate gene frequencies can exist but are unstable; the conditions for stable polymorphism for altruistic traits are briefly discussed.
