This brief article is intended to be an illustrative rather than an exhaustive statement of training opportunities in and counseling in the United States at this time. Since more and more people in the field are using the terms marriage counseling (or therapy) and family counseling (or therapy) synonymously, this article will employ both terms. This discussion excludes the routine clinical education integral to basic professional education in the three major disciplines of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, although some brief review of recent innovations in those fields follows.
