This study aims to evaluate how the characteristics of primary care patients with stroke differ from those in the PROGRESS trial that informs clinical guidelines for blood pressure management.
Population-based cross-sectional survey of 520 patients with stroke or transient ischaemic attack.
Participants were from seven general practices in south Birmingham, England.
Data collected included demographics, blood pressure readings, and antihypertensive treatments received.
Patients in the study were, on average, 12 years older than PROGRESS participants.
61% of patients had systolic blood pressure over 140 mm Hg, and 77% over 130 mm Hg.
28% were taking thiazide diuretics, while 26% were on angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
