Having undertaken research on polymers for more than 50 years, I thought that I had little more to learn, but I was mistaken. I would like to share my recent experience with you in discovering the properties and potential of dielectric elastomers. They were introduced to me by a colleague of mine in Manchester, our editor, Lujia (Tony) Chen, along with my other colleague, Mufeng Liu. This resulted in our review paper “Next-Generation Wave Energy Harvesting with Dielectric Elastomer Generators” [1], which was published in the last edition of this magazine and is leading to a growing program of research on dielectric elastomers in our laboratories in Manchester.
