Ferroelectric properties of polyphenylethernitrile were investigated in the temperature range of 20°C to 240°C. Typical electric displacement-electric field ( D-E ) hysteresis was observed only in the quenched sample. The remanent polarization and the coercive field at 115°C (0.1 Hz) were about 10 mC/m 2 and 75 MV/m, respectively. A broader X-ray diffraction pattern from the quenched sample suggested a typical amorphous state. This sample was found to have a large remanent polarization (∼ 70 mC/m 2 ) by poling near the glass transition temperature and a large pyroelectric activity (18 µ C/m 2 K).
