Clinical RBE values observed in radiation therapy with neutrons, X rays and 60Co gamma rays have been compared with ratios of the values for the dose mean lineal energy, yD, measured in similar beams. Following from the linear-quadratic (LQ) dose effect relation used for fractionated radiotherapy, it is estimated that the ratios of the alpha values of survival curves for early reacting tissues determined for fractionated irradiations, are approximately equal to the ratios of the yD values, if this quantity is determined for a sphere diameter of only a few nanometers.
