Loss of muscle strength is common among older adults. Progressive resistance training can attenuate age-related physiologic changes to maximize independence and mobility in older adults. Clinicians specializing in geriatric rehabilitation, including physical therapists, are well-positioned to prescribe resistance training to prevent age-related functional declines. However, resistance training may be underused because of lack of confidence or exposure to strength training principles. This narrative review highlights the benefits of resistance training on physical function, provides recommendations for implementation, and details alternative methods and considerations to offer practical advice for clinicians to apply resistance training principles in patient care.
