The effects on the infrared absorption of annealing polycristalline samples of Cu2O under oxygen atmosphere are reported. The absorption near the fundamental edge is characterized by several absorption bands with peaks at 0.65, 0.76, 0.88, 0.95, 1.10 μm and the strongest at 1.28 μm. These bands appear simultaneously and their magnitude depends upon the oxygen pressure during the annealing with a (pO2)2/3 law. In the same region of the spectrum, the effects of irradiation by α-particles from 1 to 3 MeV on analogous samples are studied also. Weaker bands appear at the same wavelengths. From comparison the approximate number of defects responsible for the absorption: 1017 cm−3 are evaluated. The discussion of the experimental results together with those of Zouaghi (see Part II) obtained by photoconductivity measurements will be presented in Part III.
