An absolute method of making simultaneous measurements of the transmission and reflection coefficients of semiconductors and insulators to a precision of better than 1% has been developed for use in the visible and infra-red regions of the spectrum. The reduction of these measurements to the optical constants by a technique taking full account of the finite spectral bandwidth of the light is also described.
