The pyrometer described measures threadline temperatures in the range 45-280°C. Radiation from the threadline in the waveband 5.7-7.0 μm is compared with radiation from a small heated plate with a blackened surface placed a few millimetres behind the threadline. The plate moves with the pyrometer as it scans back and forth across the threadline and the plate temperature is varied until there is no change in signal on scanning the threadline. Measurements have been made on threadlines as small as 40 μm in diameter. Accuracy is to ±1 degC; each measurement takes about 30 seconds.
