In this paper, we first recall the three restrictive hypotheses outside which it is not possible to speak of an optimum, and then we specify in which context (decision aid) this article is located. There follows a six point analysis of the principal deficiencies of the optimization problem formulation and some of the dangers encountered in management science and decision aid situations. Finally, four broader kinds of problem formulation are outlined.
