Percent body fat (computed from skinfold thickness) and fat distribution (measured by waist-to-hip girth ratio)

Physiologic cardiovascular risk factors (blood lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, uric acid, blood pressure, fasting serum insulin)surrogate

Obese young adults, particularly those with abdominal fat preponderance, have a physiologic profile indicating higher cardiovascular risk, which is only partly explained by fasting insulin concentrations.
