Total operative procedures fell 62.8% from 16,729 in the control period to 6,223 during the COVID-19 period, with ST1 volume dropping 59.9% (11,589 to 4,651) and ST2 volume falling 69.4% (5,140 to 1,572).
Per-trainee mean procedural volume decreased 64.0% for ST1 trainees (from 200 [median 207, range 25–348] to 72 [median 56, range 6–226]) and 63.4% for ST2 trainees (from 93 [median 86, range 19–397] to 34 [median 26, range 2–158]).
Reductions affected all complexity tiers and both independent and supervised cases, resulting in an overall 20.3% year-on-year decline across the full training year.
