The environmental issue has a lengthy history. In almost thirty years it has progressed from the agitated argumentation of a few scientists and environmentally-conscious groups to become a theme which permeates the entire society, influencing the orientation of both generalized trends and everyday decisions. During the course of this history at least two decisive changes in perspective have become necessary. The first concerned the passage of the question of the environment from a minority critique to a problem formally acknowledged and made a part of the agenda of all actors in the society. The second shift in perspective, which must take place today, is one which should lead to a vision of the environmental issue as an integral part of a larger phenomenon: the across-the-board crisis of the development model which has been dominant until today. Beginning with this new perspective, the following contribution will advocate the necessity for a more radical approach in dealing with the interaction of design and sustainability, and presents proposals for this necessity.
