Why the study?
Does ivabradine increase the occurrence of new onset atrial fibrillation in patients with acute coronary syndrome?
Does ivabradine increase the occurrence of new onset atrial fibrillation in patients with acute coronary syndrome?
May warrant AF monitoring with ivabradine in CAD; leaves open causal risk and outcome impact in prospective data.
Introduction: Ivabradine is a heart rate (HR)-lowering drug and works by a special mechanism of funny current I f inhibition. Although the mechanism of ivabradine can be thought to lead to bradycardia as a side effect but never to induce atrial fibrillation (AF), the Study Assessing the Morbidity-Mortality Benefits of the I f Inhibitor Ivabradine in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease (SIGNIFY) showed that frequency of AF and bradycardia were significantly higher in the ivabradine arm when compared with placebo. In SIGNIFY subgroup analyses, which were published later, it was claimed that neither AF nor bradycardia were related to adverse events. Thus, many debates about the incidence of AF in patients using ivabradine were aroused especially in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Aim of the work: To determine the relation between the ivabradine and occurrence of new onset AF in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Patients and methods: Retrospective analysis of the data of 488 patients admitted to our center with acute coronary syndrome during the period from January 2015 till December 2016 was done.
