The triple differential cross section for the ionisation of atomic hydrogen by fast electrons is analysed in the case of the coplanar, asymmetric geometry within the framework of the eikonal-Born series theory. Detailed calculations are performed for an incident electron energy of 250 eV, and ejected-electron energy of 5 eV and several angles of the scattered electron. The authors find that second-order effects are crucial in explaining both the positions and magnitudes of the binary and recoil peaks. Their calculations are in excellent agreement with recent absolute measurements.
