Supraventricular tachycardia is a potentially fatal complication in the immediate postoperative period following cardiac valve replacement, associated with high mortality due to impaired prosthetic function at rapid heart rates.
Postoperative SVT after valve replacement warrants vigilant monitoring; leaves open whether rate-control strategies reduce associated mortality.
A retrospective study of 503 patients undergoing cardiac valve replacement revealed that 23 patients (4.6%) developed supraventricular tachycardias in the immediate postoperative period. Six patients (26%) died directly in association with the rapid ventricular response during the episode of tachycardia. Following is a discussion of the serious clinical manifestations of these complications relative to impaired prosthetic function at rapid heart rates.
