Oscillograms are given of the observations made with a small theta-pinch device having the following parameters: peak magnetic field on axis (80 kG), period of oscillation of the field (2.5 microsecond), and capacity energy (1.3 kj at 20 kv). Results show that in the absence of a pre-ionizing field, breakdown of the gas occurs. Thus it is believed that high-frequency parasitic oscillations in the main current circuit play an important role in the breakdown processs. Typical phenomena in deuterium and helium discharges are illustrated by oscillograms from sodium iodide and stilbene scintillators placed a few inches from the discharge tubes. Other properties which effect oscillations are also discussed. (N.W.R.)
