A novel hydraulically actuated apparatus using excised dog ventricles provides a useful tool for studying heart valve action and indicator dilution.
An apparatus is described that hydraulically actuates an excised dog ventricle. Cam-operated pumps programme flow through the heart valves to approximate in-vivo blood flow. The intact valves and the tortuous ventricular surface provide the authentic mixing influences that are important for indicator dilution studies. The apparatus is also a useful tool for studying heart valve action.
