Intracardiac right-to-left shunting via a patent foramen ovale may complicate acute myocardial infarction, producing severe irreversible hypoxia. This lesion must be considered in the differential diagnosis of hypoxia in such patients. (Arch Intern Med138:1405-1406, 1978)
