Mitochondria are the center of energy metabolism, and more than 95 % of energy in human body are from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The changes in mitochondrial function during the hypoxic adaptation are an important mechanism. These changes in mitochondrial function are under control of mitochondrial genome sequence. This article reviewed the relationship between the mitochondrial genome variation and altitude hypoxia adaptation.
