Dictionary on Computer (DOC) is part of a project to exploit the potentialities of a computer in phonological research. The immediate object is to reconstruct the phonological histories of the main Chinese dialects. At the same time it is hoped that more will be learned about the way in which phonological structures in general change, and about the relation between such changes and the synchronic systems to which these changes lead. Of special interest are the hypotheses of lexical diffusion and phonetic actuation. The computer can treat great masses of material rapidly and precisely. Examples of the method employed are presented.
